What is Snow?

What an amazing day I had today.  I got to read to Ms. Fortenberry’s First Grade class in Trussville, AL.  Not only that I got to read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats for Read for the Record day.

As we were reading this story, I asked the kids if they had ever made a snow angel before and they all said yes.  Then, remembering who I was reading to, I asked if they had ever seen snow.  Most of them had only seen snow once or twice in their entire life.  It turns out, these students had a limited understanding of snow and I was able to share my experiences of snow with them.

These First grade students had such great questions about snow.  They wanted to know if snow felt hard like ice, because the snow that they experience is very wet.  So I got to talk about fluffy snow and shoveling.  I also got to share my experiences about eating snow, but I forgot to tell them to stay away from the yellow stuff.  I hope they get to read this and hear that. That is an important piece of information.

These wonderful students asked about how often it snows and about how much snow we get for the year.   They also wanted to know what month it begins snowing and what month it ends snowing.

I am so grateful to have been able to read this classic story to kids in an area where they do not have snow.  It was fun listening to their questions and seeing their excitement when I gave the answer.  If you would like to hear a reading of the Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, just click the video below and enjoy.

I Don’t Want Worms in my Apples

Today I visited a Kindergarten class in Chippewa Falls, WI and they had just visited an apple orchard yesterday.  One of the little girls in the class told me that she learned she didn’t want worms in her apples.  I told her that I didn’t want any worms either.

After the students shared with me what it was that they had learned about apples from the apple orchard, they told me about some of the things that they wanted to learn about apples.  They wanted to know if the apple trees are sprayed and we learned from our book that they are.

Some things that the students learned about apples were that there are over 1,000 different kinds of apples and that they can buy apples from the store or on the side of the street at a market.  We had so much fun.

Below is a quick look at our experience together.  Enjoy!
